Whistles of Ancient Secrets: A Poem

In the morning,
I walk with the dancing trees
and sing with them, as they bend
and twist their branches in the frigid air

like them, I too find myself
surrendering to winter’s frozen wind
and full moon spells

bathing in her medicine of frost and clarity
my body quivers, then relaxes,
filling my lungs with the purest air

and my heart bursts wide open
when I see the ponds are full frozen
and lily pads of ice float upon the river top

cold gusts push their way through the forest
of sleeping trees and whispery grasses,

whistles of ancient secrets
soar through the woods,
inspiring sleepy new growth and
hugging the biggest trees along their way
as if old friends, and ah, of course they’re old friends

the meadow made sounds which frightened
me today, so I stayed a bit longer.
